We are seeking a dedicated and experienced individual to join our team as a Special Investigations Captain. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated leader to make a meaningful impact in the field of corrections.
The Office of the Inspector General provides professional investigative resources for the South Dakota Department of Corrections, its facilities, employees, offender population, law enforcement community and stakeholders of South Dakota. Through the use of systematic investigative techniques, this position plans and coordinates criminal and administrative investigations as well as preparation of appropriate documentation and reports. This position conducts investigations of offenders and employees’ misconduct to include violations of state statutes, federal laws and/or violations of administrative regulations. Investigations may include, but are not limited to, discrimination, sexual harassment complaints, use of force allegations, staff and offender relationships and other allegations of employee misconduct.
Responsibilities include maintaining professionalism and integrity when interacting with individuals, providing daily management of specialized units in the office of the Inspector General (OIG) to ensure objectives, mission, and goals of the division and department are accomplished. Plans and organizes investigators activities, recommends department policy related to criminal activities, develops a budget request, utilizes program resources, and supervises subordinate investigators. Position will require travel, extended hours, and being available as needed to correctional facilities in the state of South Dakota. In addition to reporting to the Inspector General, this position will work and coordinate with the Inspector General.
This position is responsible for planning and directing the work of the investigation department. The preferred qualifications for applicants is experience and knowledge of institutional and community based correctional operations and investigations and intelligence background. Applicant must be able to work independently and as a team member; possess strong written and verbal communication skills, be competent with computers, and have strong analytical and leadership skills. The applicant must have a professional attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, and be able to manage time efficiently and handle multiple priorities simultaneously. Applicants must be self-motivated with strong attention to detail. In addition, this position requires on-call status and travel.
Licenses and Certifications:
Preferred Law Enforcement Training and Investigative Experience
The Ideal Candidate will have:
Graduated from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in a field of study such as criminal justice, psychology, sociology, management, business management, or similar related field of study. (College/university transcripts noting name of college/university, name of student, degree type and date conferred/awarded must be submitted with resume/application in order to receive credit.)

Three (3) years of professional investigative experience appropriate to the position; The majority of duties must be as an investigator. A number of these duties would have included but were not limited to conducting investigations on property and persons (both), filing misdemeanor and felony cases, applying for search warrants pursuant to state Rules of criminal Procedure. A combination of professional investigative experience (lead worker/supervisor of criminal investigators).

A combination of education (Criminal Justice, Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, or similarly related field) and experience as defined above equal to three (3) years.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATION:
Supervisory law enforcement criminal investigator experience and in a correctional environment.
