Correctional Maintenance Officer I – Refrigeration Mechanic

The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) is seeking a Correctional Maintenance Officer I – Refrigeration Mechanic. This role combines skilled trade work with supervision of incarcerated individuals in maintaining and repairing refrigeration and related mechanical systems at correctional facilities. The position starts under close supervision, with greater independence as experience develops.


Position Duties

Supervision and Training:

  • Oversee and train incarcerated individuals performing maintenance tasks.

  • Maintain discipline, security, and control; conduct contraband searches and administer corrective actions as needed.

  • Assign and inspect work to ensure compliance with quality standards.

Administrative Functions:

  • Estimate time, materials, and supplies for tasks.

  • Order materials and maintain accurate records of usage.

Trade-Related Functions:

  • Perform installation, maintenance, and repair of refrigeration systems.

  • Operate hand and power tools safely; maintain work records.

  • Escort vendors and inspect completed work for quality.

Other Duties:

  • Support emergency repairs or special projects as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalency acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education.

  • Foreign education requires credential evaluation prior to hire.

Experience:

  • Minimum of two years of refrigeration mechanic experience.

  • Military experience in relevant specialty codes may substitute at a rate of two years of military service per required civilian experience year.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid Maryland motor vehicle operator’s license may be required.

  • Some positions require EPA Section 608 technician certification for servicing refrigeration equipment.

  • Completion of the Entrance Level Correctional Training Course through the Maryland Correctional Training Commission during the probationary period.

Special Requirements:

  • Must meet Correctional Officer certification standards: U.S. citizen or Resident Alien, minimum age 21, background investigation, oral interview, and physical exam.

  • Subject to 24-hour call-in availability and substance abuse testing.


Selection Process

  • Candidates complete the Entry Level Training Program at the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC) Academy.

  • Upon graduation, candidates are assigned to correctional facilities statewide.

  • Candidates remain on the certified eligible list for two years.

Common Disqualifiers:

  • Drug use, criminal history, driving violations, failure to meet academy standards, and less-than-honorable military discharges.

Examination Process:

  • Applications are assessed based on education, training, and experience.

  • Complete and accurate reporting of relevant experience is required; incomplete applications will not be considered.
