POSITION DUTIES
The Police Officer II at the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) is the full performance level of law enforcement work enforcing laws, rules, and regulations governing the safety and protection of personnel and State property. Employees may be assigned to day, evening, night, or rotating shifts, which may include holidays and weekends.
Personnel in this classification will perform the following duties:
Perform safety, patrol, and security duties in motor vehicles or on foot
Confront prowlers and suspicious persons
Respond to disturbances and emergencies; render emergency first aid
Prepare detailed reports documenting unusual incidents, following agency guidelines to ensure consistency and accuracy
Conduct investigations into suspected criminal activities, gathering evidence and witness statements as needed
Make arrests of individuals involved in criminal acts and transport them to appropriate facilities using state-issued vehicles
Staff an operations center to oversee and coordinate security personnel
Testify in court in connection with arrests made while on duty
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must meet all minimum qualifications and license requirements to be considered.
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission regulation.
Experience: Six months of experience as a certified law enforcement officer.
Notes:
The educational requirement is set by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission (Public Safety Article, Section 3-207).
Military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher in Protective Service classifications or Law Enforcement specialty codes may substitute year-for-year for required experience.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Willingness to work a flexible shift and be on call 24-hours
Experience patrolling, securing, and monitoring premises
Employment as a certified law enforcement officer within the last 3 years
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, AND CERTIFICATIONS
Must possess a Police Officer certification required by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission at the time of application
Formerly certified applicants eligible for recertification meet the requirement
May be required to possess or obtain a special police commission
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
U.S. Citizenship, minimum age 21, satisfactory background investigation, oral interview, physical examination, and valid Maryland driver’s license
Must provide a reachable phone number
May be required to bear firearms and demonstrate proficiency
Subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Maryland regulations
SELECTION PROCESS
Provide sufficient information to show you meet the qualifications. Candidates will be ranked Best Qualified, Better Qualified, or Qualified and placed on the employment list for at least one year.
EXAMINATION PROCESS
Assessment may include evaluation of education, training, and experience. Include all relevant experience and education.
