Asst. Deputy Director - Operations (#011310) Operations, Columbia (RICHLAND)

Job Responsibilities

• Assist in managing the secure and orderly operation of 28 state correctional institutions housing over 23,000 inmates.
• Support the direction and management of a security workforce of more than 2,400 staff in alignment with correctional best practices.
• Conduct routine inspections of correctional facilities to ensure compliance with operational, sanitation, and safety standards.
• Respond to inquiries and concerns from legislators, local officials, and the public.
• Represent the agency as required in meetings, briefings, and external engagements.
• Coordinate inmate group activities, movement, security operations, transfers, and mass releases.
• Participate in the development, review, and implementation of policies and procedures.
• Respond to emergency situations, including assisting with inmate escape response and apprehension efforts.
• Communicate with inmates and their families—both in person and through phone or written correspondence—regarding assignments, custody levels, and disciplinary matters.
• Oversee daily office operations, including the review and management of correspondence and responses.
• Directly supervise nine (9) hearing officers responsible for administering the inmate disciplinary system.
• Maintain flexibility in working hours as operational needs require.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements

• A bachelor’s degree and relevant program management experience.

SCDC Minimum Requirements

• A bachelor’s degree and eight (8) years of responsible administrative or management experience in a correctional environment; or
• An associate degree and ten (10) years of responsible administrative or management experience in a correctional environment; or
• A high school diploma and twelve (12) years of responsible administrative or management experience in a correctional environment.

Required Experience:

• At least six (6) years in a supervisory role.

Preferred Qualifications

• Two (2) years of upper-level management experience preferred.
